A brief look at the historical challenges that have hampered smart city development, a different definition of what it means to be smart, and an examination of the role that the platform plays in developing communities that are happy, healthy and sustainable in the long term.

Richard Budel is the Chief Technology Officer for Huawei’s government industry team in Western Europe, providing leadership over the design and delivery of Huawei’s solutions for Smart, Safe and Healthy Cities. Mr. Budel is also the Executive Director of Industry Solutions for the Public Sector in Western Europe. Mr. Budel’s clients cover government clients in Germany, UK, Italy, Spain, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Portugal and Belgium.

With the support of Huawei’s New ICT, Mr. Budel is helping government clients to transform the way in which they operate and deliver services to citizens using critical technologies such as cloud computing, Big Data, the Internet of Things (IoT), Software-Defined Networking (SDN), and 4G/5G mobile broadband.
